New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has reported an extraordinary rise in seizures during the ongoing assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, with a total worth of Rs 858 crore, marking a significant increase compared to the 2019 elections.

In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, seizures amounted to Rs 103.61 crore, while in Jharkhand, the total was Rs 18.76 crore. However, this year’s seizures in both states have surged dramatically, totaling seven times the amount recorded in the previous election cycle.

The sharp rise in confiscated goods reflects enhanced monitoring and vigilance by the Election Commission, aimed at curbing the flow of illicit money and materials that could influence voter behavior. The seizures include cash, liquor, drugs, and other election-related materials.

The Election Commission’s efforts underscore its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections by preventing the misuse of resources and maintaining transparency. The sharp increase in the total value of seizures is expected to be a key talking point as the electoral process moves forward in both states.

Further investigations and actions are likely as authorities continue to scrutinize the sources of these materials and their potential impact on the electoral process
