Shimla: In a landmark verdict, eight policemen, including senior IPS officers, have been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the custodial death of Suraj, an accused in the infamous 2017 rape and murder case in Shimla. The judgment comes after a prolonged investigation conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur commented on the judgment, calling it a significant step towards justice. "I feel that the decision that has come today is very important because those who were given the responsibility of investigating this case—members of the SIT—committed another murder of the person who was in jail as an accused," Thakur stated.

He further expressed satisfaction with the conclusion of the CBI’s investigation, which led to the sentencing of the guilty officers. "Today, I am satisfied that after a long time, the investigation by the CBI was completed, the judgment came, and action was taken against the guilty. A case has been registered in which senior police officers, IPS officers, and other officers who were involved have been charged under Sections 302 and 120B," he said.
