Bhubaneswar | In a groundbreaking achievement for Eastern India, AIIMS Bhubaneswar successfully conducted its first-ever robotic knee replacement surgery. Dr. Gurudip Das, Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, announced the milestone, highlighting the significance of the event for the region and for government healthcare institutions in India.

"Yesterday we did the first robotic knee replacement in Eastern India," Dr. Das said. "It is one of the first government hospitals in India where robotics has been used to perform this procedure." He added that while robotic surgeries are relatively convenient for straightforward cases, their real test lies in handling complex cases with deformities.

The historic surgery was performed on a 66-year-old woman who had been suffering from a severely deformed knee. Using advanced robotic technology, the team achieved a high level of precision, ensuring better outcomes for the patient, who is reportedly recovering well.

Dr. Das expressed gratitude towards the Government of India, the Prime Minister, and the AIIMS Executive Director for their support in introducing this cutting-edge technology. "When we do this surgery manually, it takes around 30-60 minutes, but with robotic equipment, it took us a few minutes extra because it demands exact precision," he explained. He likened the initial experience to learning to drive a car, suggesting that with time and familiarity, surgical efficiency will improve.
