Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar issued strong remarks on Wednesday amid the ongoing Mahadayi river water-sharing dispute with Goa, asserting that the state would move ahead with its water project despite opposition. Addressing reporters, Shivakumar targeted Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, saying, “I think Goa CM Pramod Sawant has lost his mental balance. He doesn’t know that this is a federal structure. That is our land. The project is approved and we will make it. He can’t stop us.”
The Mahadayi river dispute between Karnataka and Goa has been a longstanding issue, involving concerns over water allocation and inter-state riparian rights. Karnataka plans to construct a dam to divert water for drinking and irrigation purposes, a move Goa opposes citing ecological impact and water scarcity.
Shivakumar further appealed to Karnataka BJP MPs to set aside party differences in favour of regional interest. “Mahadayi is the pride of our state. I will start the work, let them stop it. Let me see,” he added.
In a separate comment, Shivakumar supported Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s recent claim of election fraud in a Karnataka constituency. “I also agree with Rahul Gandhi. I have also done a detailed investigation on this issue,” he said, without elaborating on the specifics of the alleged irregularities.
