Goa: The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), based in Goa, on Friday flagged off a direct air cargo mission to Antarctica, a move expected to streamline logistics for India’s polar expeditions. Officials described the initiative as a significant step toward improving supply efficiency for scientific research in the region.

The direct flight is designed to carry essential cargo, including scientific equipment, food supplies, and other logistical necessities for India’s Antarctic research stations. By reducing dependency on indirect routes, the mission is anticipated to cut transit time and operational costs, thereby facilitating smoother execution of ongoing and future research projects.

An NCPOR spokesperson said, “This direct air cargo mission demonstrates India’s growing capability in polar logistics. It will enhance our operational efficiency and ensure timely delivery of crucial materials for scientific exploration.”
