Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan, underscored India’s growing prominence in the global steel industry, stating that the country has emerged as the second-largest steel producer, contributing 7.5 percent to global steel output.
Speaking from Mumbai ahead of the upcoming India Steel 2025 expo, Pradhan emphasized the strategic importance of the steel sector in India's journey towards self-reliance. “India has become the second-largest producer of steel in the world, accounting for 7.5 per cent of the world’s steel production. Domestic consumption is expected to increase in the coming days,” he said.
The minister credited India’s robust iron ore reserves, diverse energy sources, and a growing domestic market as key enablers of this rise. He described the steel sector as a “key pillar in making India self-reliant,” and noted that the government remains committed to supporting innovation, sustainable practices, and infrastructure development in the industry.
