In a determined move to mitigate waterlogging ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma visited Sriniwaspuri on Friday to inspect ongoing desilting work and ensure drains are adequately prepared. The inspection was part of a city-wide campaign by the Public Works Department to prevent flooding in low-lying areas during heavy rains.
Speaking during the inspection, Verma emphasized the urgency of timely drain cleaning. “We are making efforts for cleaning and desilting drainages ahead of the monsoon. Last year, nearly four feet of water accumulated in homes here. This time, we’re trying to ensure such a situation does not repeat,” he said.
Verma, accompanied by the local MP, Councillor, and senior officials, criticized the previous administration, particularly AAP leaders including MLA Atishi and the former Chief Minister, for alleged inaction in the area. He asserted, “It doesn’t matter whose constituency it is—we will work everywhere.”
The minister informed that desilting operations would commence within a week and added that video recordings of the work would be mandated to ensure transparency and accountability.
Addressing concerns over water supply monitoring, Verma also stated that all Delhi Jal Board tankers now have GPS installed, along with sensors and flow meters. “We are ensuring that tankers reach designated spots and actually discharge water. Payments will only be made when the work is verified. This is to end tanker mafia operations and guarantee water availability during the scorching summer,” he added.
