New Delhi: Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday said the city is fully prepared to conduct cloud seeding trials aimed at reducing air pollution, pending final approval from the Meteorological Department. The initiative, he noted, could take place around Diwali or shortly after, depending on weather conditions.

“Our cloud seeding trials were halted recently due to rain. Our Cessna aircraft has already conducted two or three trials to familiarise themselves with the area,” Sirsa said. “They have already carried out dry trials in North Delhi, and both pilots have completed all their tests except for the blast required for actual cloud seeding.”

Sirsa explained that the aircraft, which operates from Meerut, is ready to begin once the Meteorological Department gives the green light. “We have all the permissions, and after their go-ahead, the trials will be completed immediately,” he added.

The project, with a total budget of around ₹3 crore, is expected to have an immediate impact on air quality. “When it rains, the AQI drops sharply as smog and dust are cleared, and the air remains clean for four to five days,” Sirsa said.

Emphasizing that this is not a one-time experiment, Sirsa said multiple trials will follow if results prove effective. “If successful, we can expect more rounds of cloud seeding in the future,” he concluded.
