Delhi: In a significant move, Congress councillor from Mustafabad, Sabila Begum, and her husband, Khushnood Khan, have resigned from the Congress party. The couple's decision comes in response to Congress’s decision to boycott the Delhi mayoral polls, a choice they believe contradicts the party’s stance on unity and inclusivity.
Explaining the reason behind their resignation, Khushnood Khan expressed disappointment over Congress’s approach, emphasizing that the boycott benefits the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), something they cannot support given Mustafabad’s Muslim-majority demographic. He noted the contradiction between the party’s national initiatives, like Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and Nyay Yatra, aimed at uniting the country, and the Delhi Congress's decision to abstain from participating in key civic polls. “We have resigned from the membership of Congress because our leaders, Kharge ji and Rahul Gandhi ji, take out yatras to unite the nation. But in Delhi, whenever significant elections such as for the Mayor or Standing Committee arise, the local Congress walks out, effectively aiding BJP,” Khan stated.
Highlighting their ties to Mustafabad and the community's concerns, Khan further underscored their inability to support a move that aligns with BJP's interests, especially when it potentially jeopardizes their commitment to representing a Muslim-majority constituency. The couple’s departure from the party, therefore, is not only a reaction to immediate political choices but also a larger concern for how these decisions might affect the perception of Congress among minority communities.
