CHENNAI: Cyclone Fengal, currently intensifying in the Bay of Bengal, is set to impact Tamil Nadu's coastal districts as it crosses the region between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry. The Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, Dr. S. Balachandran, provided updates on the anticipated effects of the cyclone.
"Mostly coastal districts will be affected. The crossing point is between Karaikal to Mahabalipuram near Puducherry. So, all along the coastal districts, the impact will be more. There will be wind and rainfall," Dr. Balachandran stated.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast strong winds with speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting up to 90 km/h, and heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region during the cyclone’s landfall.
Authorities have issued advisories urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Coastal fishermen have been specifically warned against venturing into the sea, with local administrations working to relocate boats and fishing equipment to safer locations.
Emergency teams are on high alert, and preparations are underway to address any potential disruptions or emergencies caused by the cyclone. Citizens are encouraged to stay tuned to weather updates and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
The state government is coordinating closely with the IMD and disaster management teams to ensure timely response measures are in place for the affected regions.
