Leh, Ladakh: At least 50 people were detained on Thursday as authorities enforced a strict curfew in Leh following violent clashes that left four dead and over 80 others injured. The unrest erupted on Wednesday during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which sought to press for talks with the Centre regarding statehood for Ladakh and the extension of the Sixth Schedule protections.

According to officials, the peaceful demonstration quickly escalated into widespread violence, with reports of arson, stone-pelting, and street clashes across multiple parts of the town. Security forces, including the police and paramilitary personnel, were deployed to restore order, and curfew measures were implemented to prevent further escalation.

Local authorities said that several individuals involved in the unrest were detained for questioning, and efforts were underway to assess the extent of property damage. Hospitals in Leh reported treating numerous injuries ranging from minor cuts to serious trauma caused by stone-pelting and clashes.
