New Delhi – Addressing ongoing discussions around the impeachment motion against Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, CPI General Secretary D. Raja underscored the dual imperatives of combating judicial corruption and preserving judicial independence in India’s democracy.
Raja acknowledged that corruption within the judiciary is a serious concern shared by citizens and political parties alike. “It cannot be tolerated, and strong measures must be taken to root it out,” he said, stressing the urgency of addressing any malfeasance to maintain public trust in the legal system.
At the same time, he emphasized the critical importance of judicial independence, warning against political interference that could undermine the judiciary’s role as a guardian of democracy and fundamental rights.
Regarding the ongoing impeachment proceedings, Raja urged the government to engage in meaningful consultations with opposition parties rather than proceeding unilaterally on such sensitive matters. “The government should consult with opposition parties. It should not assume that it can proceed unilaterally on such important matters,” he stated.
