New Delhi: Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary D Raja on Thursday strongly criticized the 50 percent tariff imposed by the United States on Indian goods, calling it a “tariff war” against sovereign nations.

“Our party, the Communist Party of India, strongly condemns what the Trump administration is doing as far as the tariff is concerned. It is nothing but a tariff war on sovereign independent nations in the world,” Raja said.

He questioned Washington’s attempts to influence India’s trade and energy choices, particularly on oil imports. “How can he dictate whether India should buy oil from Russia or not? It is for India to decide from which countries it can import, to which countries it can export, and what its policy should be,” he remarked.

Emphasizing India’s independence, Raja urged the government to assert itself against US pressure. “We are a sovereign nation. We are not just a stooge of American imperialist power. Mr Modi should stand up and speak out, condemning what the Trump administration is doing,” he said.
