The Congress on Saturday took a sharp swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over India’s absence from the US-led ‘Pax Silica’ strategic initiative, arguing that the country has missed an important opportunity to strengthen its position in the global silicon supply chain.

Reacting to reports of the grouping, the opposition party said it was “perhaps not very surprising” that India was not included, pointing to what it described as a “sharp downturn” in ties between former US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi. The Congress suggested that strained personal and diplomatic equations may have played a role in India being left out of a critical strategic framework at a time when global supply chains are being restructured.

In a statement, the party asserted that participation in the ‘Pax Silica’ initiative would have been to India’s advantage, especially given the country’s ambitions to emerge as a major manufacturing and technology hub. It argued that access to a secure and trusted silicon supply chain is increasingly vital for sectors ranging from semiconductors and electronics to defence and renewable energy.
