New Delhi: Congress national spokesperson Shama Mohamed voiced strong criticisms of the BJP's approach to national unity, drawing on the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Speaking passionately, she stated, “Sardar Patel stood for the unity of India. When Indian independence happened, he saw to it that every small state like Junagadh and Hyderabad came into India because we are Bharat, we are united. He wanted to integrate.”
Mohamed argued that the current mentality of the BJP is contrary to Patel's vision, asserting that the party's actions are leading to disintegration rather than integration. “Now what are they doing? The mentality of the BJP is to disintegrate. I urge them to do what Sardar Patel did—to integrate India and not disintegrate. That is when you give respect to Sardar Patel,” she emphasized.
She criticized the BJP's symbolic gestures, such as building statues, claiming that these actions do not honor Patel's true legacy. “Building a tall statue and talking about Sardar Patel will not give him the respect that the Congress party is giving him,” she stated. Mohamed highlighted that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi consistently advocates for unity among Indians, contrasting this with the divisive narratives she attributes to the BJP.
Furthermore, she reminded the audience that Sardar Patel took a firm stance against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), calling for an end to what she described as “drama.” Concluding her remarks, Mohamed reaffirmed Patel’s status as a towering figure within the Indian National Congress, insisting that true respect for his legacy lies in upholding the values of unity and integration he championed.
