New Delhi — The Congress party on Tuesday accused the central government of engaging in “politics of oppression and intimidation,” alleging that its senior leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are being deliberately targeted in the National Herald case.
Speaking at a joint press conference with senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, party communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh said the legal actions are politically motivated and aimed at distracting the public from the country’s economic hardships and key foreign policy concerns.
“The politics of oppression and intimidation is taking place,” Ramesh said. “Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are being deliberately targeted. This is a case of the National Herald. I want to say that this is an attempt to divert attention from the economic crisis we are facing. This is an effort to divert our attention from America, China, and Bangladesh.”
Abhishek Manu Singhvi backed the statement, reiterating that the government is misusing investigative agencies to silence the opposition and deflect criticism of its governance. The party has consistently maintained that the National Herald investigation is part of a wider pattern of vendetta politics against political adversaries.
