Delhi, December 10, 2024: In a strong statement regarding the ongoing farmers' protest, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla expressed concern over the treatment of protesting farmers, calling their demands "genuine" and highlighting the government's unwillingness to engage in meaningful dialogue.
Aujla pointed out that farmers have been protesting for nearly a year, often traveling in small convoys, yet they have been met with resistance, including "stones and soft bullets." The Congress leader condemned the government's approach, asserting that such actions are unjust and that farmers' voices should be heard rather than suppressed.
“Their demands are genuine. They have been protesting for almost a year, and yet the government is not ready to speak with them on any issue,” Aujla said during a media interaction. He criticized the government for not engaging with the farmers and allowing the protest to escalate unnecessarily.
The farmers have announced plans to march into Delhi on December 14, and Aujla called on the government to allow the peaceful protest to proceed without obstruction. "The government should let them enter Delhi and peacefully present their grievances,” Aujla said, urging the authorities to facilitate a resolution rather than prolonging the standoff.
The farmers have been protesting against controversial agricultural laws and demanding their repeal, while also seeking fair prices for their produce and improved conditions for the rural workforce. Despite ongoing negotiations, the protest continues to be a point of contention, with both sides maintaining firm positions.
As the situation remains tense, Aujla’s statement serves as a call for both the government and farmers to come together for a constructive dialogue that addresses the root causes of the protest.
