New Delhi | Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has voiced strong reservations about the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, cautioning that it could be misused to target individuals based on political ideology.
“I think this law is likely to be misused. We have seen in the past that Indian-origin individuals who want to visit India to take care of their elderly parents are often barred from entering the country. They don’t get their requested visas simply because of their political opinions and critics of this government. Denying a visa to a person solely due to their political ideology is very wrong,” Gogoi stated.
His remarks reflect growing concerns among the opposition regarding the bill’s broader implications, particularly in relation to discretionary powers granted to authorities. The government, however, has defended the legislation as necessary for national security and streamlined immigration policies.
With the bill currently under parliamentary discussion, its provisions are expected to spark further debate between the ruling and opposition parties.
