Kolkata, June 11 — Tension gripped Maheshtala in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district earlier today following alleged communal clashes reportedly sparked by a dispute over the setting up of a shop. The incident led to widespread unrest, with visuals from the area showing vandalised vehicles and stone-pelting on the streets.

According to local sources, a disagreement between members of two communities over the placement of a roadside shop escalated into violent confrontations. In the ensuing chaos, several vehicles were damaged and groups were seen throwing stones at one another.

Heavy police deployment has since been put in place across Maheshtala to prevent further escalation. Senior officers from the district police are on the ground to monitor the situation and restore calm. “The situation is under control. We are conducting a thorough investigation to identify the culprits behind the violence,” said a senior police official.
