Raipur | Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, while speaking at an event commemorating the Emergency period, called June 25 a “black day” in Indian democracy and emphasized the need to remember the era’s impact on civil liberties and political dissent. The day is being observed as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Divas’ (Constitution Killing Day) across the state.

Addressing the gathering, CM Sai recalled the repression faced by many during the Emergency, including those from the region that now forms Chhattisgarh. “Nearly 150 people from Chhattisgarh, though the state wasn’t formed back then, were put in jail during the Emergency,” he said. “Many families were deeply affected by the crackdown, including my own. One of my family members was imprisoned under MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act),” he added.
