HYDERABAD — Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ignited a political storm with a controversial remark made while defending his government's decision to name public welfare schemes and subsidized canteens after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Speaking at a public event, Reddy said, “The welfare and development schemes launched by Indira Gandhi are enlightening the lives of the poor. That’s why we are naming our welfare initiatives after her — to honour her legacy. In Hyderabad, we have started canteens to provide meals for just ₹5 and even breakfast for the underprivileged. These canteens are named after Indira Gandhi.”

However, it was his sharp criticism of the opposition that drew backlash. Referring to those who protested the naming of the canteens, Reddy said, “These senseless people staged protests against naming the canteens after Indira Gandhi. They won't understand her greatness unless they’re stripped and thrashed.”

The comment quickly escalated into a political flashpoint, with opposition leaders condemning Reddy’s language as undemocratic and inflammatory. BRS leader KT Rama Rao accused the Chief Minister of degrading political discourse and questioned Congress’s claim of spreading love through its “mohabbat ki dukaan” campaign.
