Delhi witnessed a moment of national pride as Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, assumed charge as Chairperson of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). Addressing the occasion, Kumar highlighted the global acknowledgement of India’s electoral system, describing it as free, fair, and transparent.

He said that, for the first time in 30 years, India has been invited by 37 democratic countries to lead the international organisation, reflecting the trust and recognition India has earned on the global stage. “This is a moment of immense pride for all Indians and election officials. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!” Kumar remarked, emphasising the significance of this achievement for the country’s democratic institutions.

International IDEA is a leading intergovernmental organisation committed to supporting sustainable democracy worldwide. As Chairperson, Kumar is expected to provide guidance and leadership in promoting democratic principles, electoral integrity, and governance reforms across member countries.
