New Delhi: In a bid to accelerate action against worsening air pollution in the National Capital Region, the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has constituted an expert committee to devise targeted strategies for reducing vehicular emissions — one of the region’s largest pollution sources.
According to the commission, the committee will be chaired by Ashok Jhunjhunwala, a distinguished professor at IIT Madras known for his work in clean energy systems, electric mobility and sustainable technological solutions. The decision comes amid persistently poor air quality levels across Delhi-NCR, with winter months further aggravating the pollution burden.
The newly formed panel is expected to examine current vehicular emission patterns, gaps in enforcement, fuel standards, congestion levels, and the pace of transition to electric and cleaner mobility. It will also recommend both immediate and long-term measures, including stricter compliance norms, infrastructure upgrades, fleet modernisation and mechanisms to curb pollution from commercial transport.
