Srinagar: Several villages in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir were submerged on Thursday after a breach occurred in the Jhelum River bund near Zoonipora, officials said.

According to the district administration, the breach led to flooding in villages including Shalina, Rakh Shalina, and Baghi Shakirshah. Residents from these areas were evacuated overnight and moved to designated rescue centres and safer locations. Authorities said no casualties were reported during the evacuation process.

There are continuing concerns for nearby villages Seerbagh and Summerbugh, where rising waters pose a threat of inundation. Rescue teams are working to relocate people from these vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure.

In a social media post, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the situation and urged residents to heed official advisories. “People of these areas are requested to move to safer areas till the water level recedes,” the statement read.
