BJP General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Wednesday alleged that the Congress party had compromised on national values a century ago by sidelining the national song Vande Mataram to appease leaders of the Muslim League.
Addressing a press conference, Chugh said the incident took place in 1923 during the Kakinada session of the Congress. “In 1923, during the Kakinada Congress session, when Pandit Vishnu Digambar was invited to sing Vande Mataram, Congress president Maulana Mohammad Ali objected to it on religious grounds,” he said.
Chugh claimed that to pacify Muslim League leaders, the Congress Working Committee subsequently took an official decision to replace Vande Mataram as the national song. “To appease the leaders of the Muslim League, the Congress Working Committee then officially decided to replace the national song,” he asserted.
