Delhi: BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala on Saturday reacted to RJD leader Rohini Acharya’s announcement that she is quitting politics and distancing herself from her family, calling the issue an internal matter but raising pointed questions about the party’s credibility on women’s safety.

Poonawala said that while he would not comment extensively on family matters within RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav’s household, the circumstances highlighted by Acharya’s decision could not be ignored. “This is an internal matter of Lalu Yadav's family and his party. One should not comment much on this,” he said.

However, he added that the situation naturally prompted concerns about the party’s capacity to ensure safety and respect for women. “A question arises in the mind that if his daughter is not respected, safe and protected in her own house—some outsiders attack her, she is being attacked with slippers, she is being abused—then can this party give respect and protection to the daughters of Bihar and the women of Bihar?” he asked.

Poonawala argued that such incidents were reflective of the larger governance issues associated with the RJD. He said voters in Bihar had “wisely kept such a party out of power,” alleging that its return would only revive what he termed “jungle raj.”
