Kolkata: Tensions flared at the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Wednesday as BJP leaders staged a protest demanding a detailed discussion on the violent clash that broke out a day earlier between police and miscreants in South 24 Parganas district. The BJP accused the state government of turning a blind eye to security warnings and failing to prevent the unrest.
Leading the protest, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her administration. “Our question is—why did this happen? Didn’t you have the state IB’s information that 2,000 jihadis were going to be on the roads?” she asked. Paul alleged that the violence was not spontaneous but “orchestrated” by the ruling Trinamool Congress under Banerjee’s leadership.
She further invoked incidents from Bangladesh and West Bengal to underscore the broader communal tension. “Yesterday, Rabindranath Thakur’s home was attacked in Bangladesh. Just a few days back, his nephew’s home in Shantiniketan was attacked. Maheshtala and Murshidabad are no different,” Paul said, likening Mamata Banerjee’s politics to that of Muhammad Yunus and accusing her of catering solely to a “33% vote bank.”
The BJP also accused the Speaker of the Assembly of suppressing opposition voices. “We’ve submitted adjournment motions because this assembly is meant to discuss people’s issues. But the Speaker refuses to allow any discussion that challenges the TMC,” Paul claimed.
