New Delhi: Reacting strongly to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent remarks on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo defended the legislation and questioned the selective criticism coming from opposition leaders.
In a statement posted on social media, Deo said, “Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah should remember the Maha Kumbh of 2013 when the coordinator was a Muslim, Azam Khan. We never raised objection over it. The secretary of the Baidyanath Dham, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, was Hafiz-ul-Hasan, another Muslim. We never raised objection over it as well. However, they have a problem with the Waqf (Amendment) Act.”
Deo’s remarks come in response to Abdullah’s concerns regarding changes to the Waqf Act, which he claims may affect the autonomy and traditional functioning of Muslim religious endowments in the Union Territory.
The BJP has maintained that the amendments aim to bring transparency, accountability, and better governance to the functioning of Waqf boards across the country.
