Delhi: During a debate on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal made a strong case for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, stating that it is essential for ensuring equality and justice for all citizens. Speaking passionately on the issue, Pal emphasized that the country’s democracy should guarantee equal rights for everyone, regardless of their religion or community.
"Today, this debate on the Constitution has made one thing certain—that today, this country needs a Uniform Civil Code," Pal said. "The basic structure of a country's democracy should give equal rights to everyone." He argued that having different personal laws based on religion or community creates disparities, undermining the principle of equality enshrined in the Constitution.
The call for a Uniform Civil Code, which would replace personal laws based on religious customs with a single, unified legal framework, has been a long-standing point of discussion in Indian politics. Pal’s remarks reflected the BJP’s ongoing push for the implementation of such a code, with proponents arguing that it would ensure uniformity in matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
"Every person wants equality and justice, so why should there be different laws?" Pal continued, urging lawmakers to support the idea of a unified legal framework that gives equal rights to all citizens. "There should be a law that gives equal rights to everyone," he added, reinforcing the need for a legal system that treats all individuals equally under the law.
While the Uniform Civil Code remains a contentious issue in India, with strong opinions on both sides, Pal’s statement is part of the broader political discourse on ensuring greater equality and justice through legal reforms.
