NEW DELHI: The Delhi Assembly Winter Session witnessed sharp political tension when BJP leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Vijender Gupta demanded the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Delhi. Speaking on the floor of the House, Gupta accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of sheltering "infiltrators" from Bangladesh and Rohingya refugees, which, he claimed, was compromising the safety and law and order of the city.
“NRC should be implemented in Delhi, and politics should not be done over safety and law and order. An open discussion should be held… You (AAP) are giving shelters to infiltrators from Bangladesh and Rohingyas,” Gupta said.
The BJP MLAs staged a walkout from the session soon after Gupta's remarks, highlighting the party's protest against the issues raised. The move escalated the already heated debate over the presence of illegal immigrants in Delhi, a topic that has sparked political controversy in recent years.
The AAP government, on the other hand, has consistently denied these allegations and emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Delhi residents, irrespective of their background.
