Hyderabad: The Telangana government's recent decision to approve 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in upcoming local body elections has drawn sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP spokesperson Rachna Reddy raised concerns over the basis of the decision, questioning the legitimacy of the data used and the delay in holding local elections.

Addressing the media, Reddy said, “Out of the blue, a survey emerges, stating that there are almost 60% BCs in Telangana. Based on this, Revanth Reddy claims that he is going to introduce 42% reservations for BCs in the Gram Panchayat and local body elections, including MPTC, ZPTC, and other elections.” She alleged that the decision lacked transparency and empirical support.

Reddy also criticised the state government for delays in conducting local body polls, stating, “In Telangana, after delaying local body elections for over 2 years, many terms have ended, and special officers have been appointed. This is the state of democracy there.”

Calling on Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to provide concrete data, she added, “Please present facts and figures that align with the empirical ground reality of Telangana.”
