New Delhi: Ahead of the upcoming Constitution debate, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra has spotlighted several pressing issues for discussion, particularly the dynamics of center-state relations and Odisha’s long-standing demand for special category status.

Speaking to reporters, Patra said, “BJD has several issues to take up. One is on the center-state relations. The demand for a special category status for Odisha is a very well-justified demand that has not been given.”

The BJD, a key regional political party, has consistently argued that Odisha deserves special category status due to its unique socio-economic challenges, including frequent natural disasters and developmental disparities. Patra reiterated the party’s stance, emphasizing that federalism and the rights of states must be central to the debate.

“Centre-state relations, federalism, rights of the state—many of the areas are there that need to be discussed,” he added. Highlighting the significance of the upcoming discussions, Patra expressed optimism, stating, “I am hopeful for a very fruitful debate.”

The Constitution debate is expected to provide a platform for diverse political perspectives on India’s governance framework, including federal structures and intergovernmental relations. The BJD’s push for Odisha’s demands reflects the broader aspirations of states seeking equitable treatment and a balanced approach to resource allocation.

As the debate unfolds, it remains to be seen how effectively these issues will be addressed and whether consensus can be reached on contentious topics like special status and federal rights.
