Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday voiced serious concern over the violent political unrest in Nepal, warning that the instability could have repercussions for India.
Speaking to reporters, Baghel drew parallels with recent upheavals in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, noting that in all three cases, discontent among the younger population has played a central role. “A common factor in all three places is that the youth, aged between 20 to 30 years, have started the revolt,” he said.
Describing the situation in Nepal as “extremely alarming,” Baghel highlighted reports of widespread destruction. “The Parliament has been set on fire, the Supreme Court has been torched, the Prime Minister’s residence destroyed, and widespread vandalism has taken place,” he stated. He also referred to reports of the former Prime Minister’s wife being killed in the violence, while the current Prime Minister allegedly fled the residence.
Baghel said such turmoil in a neighbouring country is concerning for India, given the potential for cross-border impacts. “This unrest in our neighbouring country might have side effects on us as well. Whether these events are purely internal to Nepal or influenced by external forces is something only the Government of India can clarify,” he remarked.
