Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai has strongly criticized the ruling Congress government for its financial mismanagement, claiming that the state's development has stalled due to lack of funds. His comments came after Congress MLA Gaviyappa suggested dropping some of the party’s guarantee schemes to address the financial crunch.

“It is not only Gaviyappa; this is the sentiment of all MLAs, especially those from the ruling party, as they are unable to deliver on development promises in their constituencies,” said Bommai. He alleged that Congress ministers have collected several memoranda from MLAs for funds ranging from ₹20–30 crores, but none have been sanctioned due to the government’s financial constraints.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Bommai said, “There is no money for daily wagers, contractors, anganwadis, ambulance drivers, or any development work. Guarantees without any financial backing are pushing the state towards bankruptcy.”

Bommai's remarks reflect the growing dissatisfaction among Karnataka’s legislators and raise questions about the sustainability of Congress's flagship guarantee schemes, which include free electricity, subsidies, and welfare programs. Critics argue that these initiatives, though popular, have strained the state’s budget and hindered other essential expenditures.

The Congress government, however, maintains that the guarantees are crucial for the welfare of Karnataka’s citizens. As the debate intensifies, the state faces increasing pressure to balance its welfare promises with fiscal responsibility.
