New Delhi: On the subject of mpox, Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS) and Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), reassured the public that there is no need to panic. He explained that mpox, a zoonotic disease typically found in Africa's Democratic Republic of Congo, has been detected in Sweden this year, prompting the WHO to declare it a public health emergency of international concern.
Dr. Goel emphasized that the disease spreads through skin-to-skin contact and sexual exposure but noted, "We don't think that there will be many cases." He added that India recorded 30 cases between 2022 and 2023, primarily among individuals who had traveled from abroad, and assured that the country is well-prepared to handle any future cases
