KOKRAJHAR: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday highlighted the transformation of Bodoland from a region marred by violent agitation to a beacon of unity and cooperation. Speaking at the historic Assam Assembly session held in Kokrajhar, he underscored the significance of the event in cementing political unity in the state.

Recalling Assam’s history, Sarma pointed out that the state was once a harmonious home for different tribal and ethnic groups. However, post-1985, the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) region became the epicenter of a violent movement, demanding geographical and political separation from Assam. The agitation, he noted, led to the loss of thousands of lives and caused a deadlock in dialogue between the Bodo and Assamese communities.

He credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with the maturity shown by Bodo leaders, for the region’s shift towards peace post-2019. "Today, Bodoland has become a symbol of unity, a symbol of cooperation," Sarma said.

The Assam Assembly, in a departure from tradition, convened a historic session in Kokrajhar, marking a milestone in the state’s political landscape. Sarma called it a "historic day" and a realization of the dream of a united Assam. "Today is a day that all the people of Assam will remember for a long time to come," he added.

The session in Kokrajhar symbolizes the growing integration of Bodoland with the rest of Assam, signaling a new chapter of peace and progress in the region.
