Assam: Assam BJP MP Dilip Saikia has strongly defended the cultural importance of cows in Indian traditions, declaring that the recent controversy surrounding beef biryani served in a restaurant has raised serious concerns about the respect for indigenous values. In a statement, Saikia highlighted that in Sanatani traditions, cows are revered as Gau Mata (Mother Cow), a practice that is deeply embedded in the culture of India. He pointed out that even in modern times, Lord Krishna is worshipped as "Gopal," symbolizing the protector of cows.

The controversy was triggered in Assam, where a hotel allegedly served beef biryani instead of chicken biryani, leading to outrage among the local population. "This is not just a matter of food; it questions the very core of our cultural values," Saikia said. "Serving beef instead of chicken biryani is an attack on our values, which are taught by our traditions and respected by millions across India."

The BJP MP also accused the opposition, particularly Congress, of politicizing the issue, claiming that they were attempting to malign the culture of Assam and other parts of India by undermining the protection of cows. Saikia dismissed Congress' accusations that the BJP wins elections by making baseless claims, asserting that such attacks were aimed at dividing the nation.

In response to the growing controversy, the Assam Cabinet has decided to enforce a ban on the sale of beef in public places, including hotels, restaurants, and public events. "This decision is a step towards preserving our cultural heritage and ensuring that such practices do not threaten the peace and harmony of Assam," Saikia concluded.
