Guwahati, Assam: Assam Speaker Biswajit Daimary has announced that the Assam Assembly will no longer observe the traditional 2-hour break for Jumma prayers on Fridays. This change, which ends a longstanding practice dating back to the British era, reflects the Assembly's efforts to streamline its functioning and address the needs of a diverse group of members.
Daimary explained, "Since the times of the British, on every Friday of the week, Assam Assembly used to be adjourned by 11:30 am to perform Namaz. I noticed that it used to become difficult to hold discussions due to a lack of time on Fridays." He also noted that requests from members of other religions for separate time to perform their own rituals had contributed to the decision.
The speaker emphasized that the decision was made to ensure more effective use of Assembly time and to accommodate the needs of all members. "From today onwards, the Assam Assembly will not be adjourned to perform Jumma," Daimary confirmed.
The move is expected to improve legislative efficiency and address the growing demand for a more inclusive approach to time management within the Assembly..
