Haryana Minister Anil Vij on Friday strongly rebutted Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s recent comments, asserting that the government remains fully committed to constitutional procedures and democratic frameworks. Speaking in Ambala, Vij rejected the allegation of any constitutional overreach, maintaining that all decisions are being carried out within legal and constitutional boundaries.

Addressing reporters, Vij claimed that it was the Congress, not the current administration, that has historically undermined constitutional institutions. He referenced the period under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, alleging that fundamental rights were curtailed and democratic values weakened during her tenure. “There’s no attack on the Constitution from the government. Everything is being done in accordance with the Constitution,” he said.

Continuing his criticism, Vij said attacks on constitutional bodies had become ingrained within the Congress approach. “It was Congress that attacked the Constitution. Indira Gandhi trampled on it and took away fundamental rights… It is still in their DNA,” he remarked. The minister further accused Rahul Gandhi of repeatedly criticising key institutions, including the Election Commission and the Central Bureau of Investigation, stating that such actions reflect a disregard for constitutional norms.

Vij argued that Congress now seeks to revive political strategies rooted in confrontation, alleging that Rahul Gandhi intends to “trample the Constitution again, just as Indira Gandhi did.” His comments add another layer to the ongoing national debate over the role and autonomy of constitutional bodies, an issue that continues to shape political discourse ahead of forthcoming policy and electoral developments.
