New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday underlined the need for a robust mechanism to ensure the extradition and deportation of fugitives involved in drug trafficking and organized crime. Speaking at the 2nd National Conference of Heads of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of States and Union Territories, Shah said that drug cartels operating from abroad must be brought within the ambit of Indian law.

He commended the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its work in this regard and urged state-level task force heads to establish direct coordination with the agency. “Deportation and extradition of fugitives, both these things are very important. Now the time has come to bring people who are doing drug business here while sitting abroad, within the net of our law,” Shah stated.

The Home Minister added that the measures would not only strengthen the fight against drug trafficking but also aid efforts against terrorism and organized gangs. He emphasized that deportation of individuals already in custody, who allegedly continue to direct operations from within jails, also required a structured approach.
