New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday underscored the importance of extradition and deportation in combating drug trafficking and allied crimes. Speaking at the 2nd National Conference of Heads of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of States and Union Territories, Shah said that criminals operating from abroad must be brought under the purview of Indian law.

He praised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its progress in this area and urged state task force leaders to work in close coordination with the agency. “Now the time has come to bring people who are doing drug business here while sitting abroad, within the net of our law,” Shah stated, stressing the need to establish a structured system for extradition.

The Home Minister added that the framework would extend beyond narcotics to cover terrorism and organized crime. He also highlighted the issue of individuals lodged in jails allegedly continuing to facilitate illicit operations, and called for practical mechanisms to ensure their deportation.
