Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Akhilesh Yadav on Monday launched a sharp counterattack during the Lok Sabha debate on Vande Mataram, accusing the BJP of twisting historical facts and attempting to revive communal divisions under the guise of cultural nationalism. His remarks came as the House continued its heated discussion on the legacy, symbolism and political interpretations of the national song.

Taking aim at the ruling party’s narrative, Yadav said, “Those sitting here must know when the first Vande Mataram was sung.” He questioned whether those providing information to the government had an accurate understanding of history, adding, “Those ‘informers’ must be questioned why they wrote their own national song even after independence and why they didn’t hoist the tricolour.”

Yadav argued that the original sentiment behind Vande Mataram was rooted in unity and in rejecting communal divisions—principles he claimed the BJP was now undermining. “The emotion behind Vande Mataram was to reject communal politics. Our leaders in Uttar Pradesh ended such politics, which the BJP has now started,” he said.
