Kolkata: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Saturday expressed deep concern over the chaotic scenes witnessed at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium, where thousands of fans gathered to see global football stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul.
In an official statement posted on social media, the AIFF clarified that it had no involvement whatsoever in the organisation, planning or execution of the event. The federation stressed that the programme was a private event organised by a public relations agency and was conducted without its knowledge or approval.
“The AIFF was not involved in the organisation, planning, or execution of this event in any capacity,” the federation said. It further noted that no details related to the event were shared with the AIFF in advance, nor was any formal clearance sought from the national football body.
The statement comes amid widespread criticism and political reactions following reports of overcrowding and alleged mismanagement at the stadium, where fans gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the football icons. Questions have been raised over safety arrangements and crowd control, given the scale of public turnout.
Emphasising public safety, the AIFF urged all attendees to cooperate fully with the relevant authorities and maintain order. “The safety and security of all individuals involved must remain the paramount priority,” the federation said.
