Chennai, Tamil Nadu | The alleged sexual assault of a student within Anna University’s campus has sparked outrage, with AIADMK Advocate R Varalakshmi demanding immediate judicial intervention. Speaking to reporters, Varalakshmi expressed grave concern over the incident and called for accountability from university authorities.
"We are very concerned about it, so we have requested the court to take suo motu action in this case," she stated. The advocate criticized the lack of adequate surveillance systems on campus, which she claimed contributed to a lapse in ensuring students’ safety. "There are not enough surveillance cameras working inside the campus," she said, emphasizing the need for stricter security measures.
Varalakshmi also raised serious questions about the role of Anna University’s internal complaints committee, which is tasked with addressing harassment and assault cases. "What is the internal complaints committee of Anna University doing? This is also a question of the court," she remarked.
The matter has been brought before the judiciary, with the court scheduling a hearing for tomorrow morning at 10:30 AM. Authorities from Anna University and other stakeholders have been directed to respond to the court’s queries during the proceedings.
The case has reignited concerns about campus safety and the mechanisms in place to address sexual harassment. Students and activists have also called for urgent reforms to ensure a safe environment for all students.
