Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in accelerating India’s transition toward a modern, efficient and technology-driven energy ecosystem. In a detailed post on Tuesday, the minister said AI is now deeply embedded across multiple stages of India’s energy operations, strengthening the country’s ability to meet rising demand while optimising performance and safety.

According to Puri, AI-driven tools are significantly improving exploration efficiency across 150 oil and gas blocks, supporting work programmes worth USD 4.36 billion. Enhanced data analytics and predictive modelling, he noted, are enabling faster decision-making and more precise assessments of resource potential.

In the midstream sector, AI is being used to monitor 25,429 km of pipelines, improving surveillance, reducing leak risks and ensuring smoother operations. On the distribution front, the technology is powering reliable energy supply to 1.56 crore PNG (piped natural gas) households and 8,340 CNG stations across the country.

AI applications are also contributing to cleaner energy production, notably through the optimisation of output from 126 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants, supporting India’s broader shift toward biofuels and sustainable alternatives.

Puri said these advancements reflect Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a digitally enabled energy sector, adding that India’s rapid integration of AI is setting “a global benchmark” for innovation in energy management and delivery.
