Kolkata, West Bengal | Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has strongly criticized the proposed 'One Nation, One Election' bill, calling it an impractical idea and a threat to the federal structure of the country. Speaking to reporters, Chowdhury revealed his refusal to engage with the committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind on the matter.

“When the proposal was mooted, I was invited by the committee chaired by former President Kovind. I flatly refused to participate in this futile exercise,” Chowdhury said.

He elaborated on his objections, stating that the idea is “logistically unsustainable” and undermines the federal nature of India’s governance. According to Chowdhury, implementing simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies would create severe administrative and constitutional challenges.

“This proposal is a severe infringement upon the federal structure of our country. The government has been hatching a plan for a long time to turn India into a presidential system of governance,” he alleged, accusing the ruling dispensation of attempting to centralize power.

The 'One Nation, One Election' proposal has sparked heated debates across the political spectrum. Proponents argue that it could streamline election processes and reduce costs, while critics, including Chowdhury, warn of its potential to disrupt India’s democratic balance.
