Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday raised sharp criticism of the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging inconsistencies in the electoral rolls used for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking in Delhi, Banerjee referred to the Commission’s acknowledgment of the presence of “dead voters” in electoral lists, arguing that this cast doubt on the credibility of the polls.
Banerjee asserted that if the rolls were faulty, then the 2024 elections had also been conducted on the same basis, questioning the legitimacy of the current government. He suggested that a nationwide scrutiny of rolls should be undertaken and said an investigation ought to follow. The TMC leader alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was attempting to curtail citizens’ democratic rights, accusing it of being unwilling to face the electorate fairly.
He also criticised the Election Commission’s recent directive that individuals whose names were removed from voter lists must submit affidavits within seven days to validate their claims, calling the move restrictive.
