New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has criticised the Centre following US President Donald Trump's decision to impose steep tariffs on Indian goods, calling it a failure of India’s foreign diplomacy. Banerjee’s remarks come amid rising political heat over the economic fallout of the move.
“The US has announced a 50 per cent tariff on India, and this will definitely affect our economic system,” Banerjee said, warning of a direct impact on crucial sectors such as textiles, information technology, and pharmaceuticals — all key export-driven industries that contribute significantly to India’s GDP and employment.
Banerjee remarked, “It is not fair to ask us these questions. These questions should be asked to those who have pictures with Donald Trump,” taking a dig at BJP leaders without naming them directly. His statement implied that those closely aligned with the Trump administration should be held accountable for the worsening trade dynamics.
