Gujarat: In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Gopal Italia has won the Visavadar Assembly seat in the 2025 Gujarat by-election, marking a major breakthrough for the party in a state traditionally dominated by the BJP.
Following the announcement of results, senior AAP leader Gopal Rai declared the win as “historic,” pointing to the sharp increase in AAP’s vote share as evidence of a shifting political tide in Gujarat. “This is a historic victory in Gujarat, particularly in the Visavadar seat. The way AAP secured three times more votes than last time shows that the days of BJP’s 'Operation Lotus' politics are over. This landmark win signals a new wave of change in Gujarat,” Rai said in a social media post.
Gopal Italia, a prominent Patidar face and former Gujarat AAP president, had earlier contested state elections without success, but his bypoll win now positions him as a key figure in AAP’s Gujarat strategy ahead of the 2027 state elections.
