Amid political reactions to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff and an additional penalty on India, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Ashok Kumar Mittal strongly criticized the language and intent behind the statement. Speaking in Delhi, Mittal raised concerns over what he called an infringement on India’s sovereignty and economic choices.

“How can a free country impose a penalty on another free country? This word itself is derogatory,” said Mittal, referring to Trump’s use of the term “penalty.” He further questioned U.S. criticism of India’s continued oil trade with Russia, asking, “Who are they to dictate to us not to buy oil from Russia?”

Mittal also responded to Trump’s earlier remarks allegedly describing India’s economy as “dead.” Rejecting the claim, he said, “India's economy is growing continuously. Our GDP is growing the most in the whole world.”

Mittal’s comments reflect broader concerns in Indian political circles about external influence on national policy decisions, particularly regarding trade and energy. While Trump is not currently in office, his statements are closely monitored due to his political prominence and potential candidacy in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
